Meet the authors

 

 

 

 

JOAN LAZAR is both a scientist and a reading specialist. She began her professional career as a doctoral candidate in chemistry at Yale University but eventually felt a calling to nonprofit work and research that centered on struggling readers. Drawing on her background in science, she, together with Christine Vogel, created two highly effective literacy nonprofit organizations in Newark, New Jersey: Reading Naturally, a teacher and tutor training organization, and The Newark Literacy Campaign, a citywide reading tutorial service for people of all ages. Joan Lazar has received the Outstanding Nonprofit Leader award twice from the Prudential Foundation, as well as the Literacy Advocate of Newark award from the United Way of Essex County.

 

 

 

CHRISTINE VOGEL, a graduate of Georgetown University, founded The Learning Experience, and alternative high school in Newark for students who had dropped out of traditional education. Additionally, Ms. Vogel is an award-winning producer of television and radio documentaries, the former Associate Director of the Education Division in charge of the Learning Lab at WNET/Thirteen, New York's flagship public television station, and the author of Eeyore's Books for Children. Ms. Vogel has developed an approach to teaching writing to adult literacy learners and has taught writing to adults involved in the Newark Literacy Campaign for many years. Currently she is Chief Development and Branding Officer for AFS International, sponsoring study abroad for teens around the world.
